There is no doubt that financial planners can provide helpful investing services for individuals who can afford their hourly rates (typically around $185 per hour) or have a high net worth (usually over $100,000 or more to invest).  They are paid in a few different ways. They can charge a percentage of the money you have them manage, typically around 1%. (If you are paying more than 1% for your financial planner's services, we recommend that you listen to our negotiating lesson and call to renegotiate.) They can also charge an hourly fee or flat maintenance fee, sometimes yearly or quarterly and can vary by planner.
